Train Correctly: The Basics of Proper Exercise Technique

Train Correctly: The Basics of Proper Exercise Technique

Strength training is not only about weight and repetitions. How you perform an exercise is equally important. Controlled technique helps you target the intended muscles and perform movements more safely. There is not always one identical ideal position for everyone. Body structure, mobility, and the equipment being used can influence technique. However, several basic principles apply to almost every exercise. Technique comes before weight Choose a weight that allows you to control the movement throughout the entire set. The final repetitions may feel challenging, but your technique should not deteriorate significantly. If you have to swing your body, use excessive momentum, or can no longer control the movement, the weight may be too heavy. Reduce it and focus on performing the exercise correctly first. Start from a stable position Before beginning an exercise, establish a stable starting position. Your feet or other points of contact should be secure, and your body should remain sufficiently stabilised throughout the movement. Correct equipment adjustment is also important. The seat height, backrest, handles, and machine pivot points should suit your body and the intended movement. Control both phases of the movement Control the weight not only when lifting or pushing it but also when returning it to the starting position. Do not simply let it drop, and avoid unnecessary jerking movements. A controlled pace helps you become more aware of the muscles working. Faster or explosive repetitions can be useful in certain types of training, but they require experience and appropriate instruction. Use an appropriate range of motion Move through the range that you can manage comfortably and with control. A very limited range may reduce the training effect, but forcing your body into a larger movement is not advisable either. Your range of motion may gradually improve as your strength, mobility, and exercise experience increase. Remember to breathe During regular strength exercises, avoid holding your breath continuously. As a simple guideline, breathe out during the more demanding phase of the movement and breathe in as you return the weight under control. Steady breathing can help you maintain your movement rhythm and avoid unnecessary tension. Have your technique checked Professional feedback is particularly valuable when learning new or complex exercises. A coach can assess whether an exercise suits your current ability and determine which adjustments may be necessary. Recording a training video can also help you view your movement from another perspective. The goal is not for every repetition to look absolutely perfect, but to perform the exercise with control, stability, and in a way that suits your body. Conclusion: quality matters more than lifting as much as possible Good exercise technique begins with an appropriate weight, a stable starting position, and controlled movement. Increase the resistance only once you can perform the exercise confidently. At MY FITNESS CLUB, detailed exercise videos demonstrate the most important movement patterns. Our coaches also help you adapt your training to your current fitness level and personal goals.
